1. Confirm the Requirements & Recent Updates
All real estate licensees (salespersons and brokers) must complete 22.5 hours of approved continuing education (CE) every two years.
Those 22.5 hours must include mandatory components, such as:
- 3 Hours of Fair Housing
- 1 Hour of Agency (if this is a first time renewal you need 2 hours)
- 2.5 Hours of Ethical Business Practices
- 1 Hour of Recent Legal Issues
- 2 Hours Implicit Bias
- 2 Hours Cultural Competency
- You also need to complete 11 hours of elective classes approved for CE credit by the NYS DOS. Total hours for renewing a NYS RE license is 22.5 hour of CE credit every two year.
Tip to verify current status: Always check the New York Department of State (NY DOS) site or the eAccessNY licensing portal for the latest rules, because statutes and regulations may change.
2. Finish Your CE Courses Before Expiration
You must complete all required CE before your license’s expiration date (i.e. within the two-year window).
Any hours over 22.5 do not carry forward into the next cycle.
Use DOS-approved education providers (online or classroom) so the courses will be accepted.
3. Log Into eAccessNY and Submit Renewal
Renewals are submitted online through eAccessNY, New York’s licensing management portal.
If you don’t yet have an eAccessNY account, you must register one.
Once logged in, you select the “Renew License” or “Renew / Update License” option.
You will be asked to certify (attest) that you completed your CE, and confirm/update your personal and brokerage information.
4. Pay the Renewal Fee
5. After Renewal
Once renewal is accepted and processed, your license status in eAccessNY should update to active / renewed.
It’s wise to print or save a copy of the renewed license for your records.
Verify your license and status via the public NY DOS license search tool. Department of State+2Department of State+2
6. What If Your License Has Expired?
If your license has expired, you must cease all real estate activity until it is renewed.
You have up to two years from the expiration date to renew without re-taking the state exam. =
If you do not renew within two years, you must reapply as a new applicant, meet current requirements, and pass the exam again.
